Im Zeitalter des grenzenlosen Individualismus fand ich die heutige ‘daily meditation’ von Henri Nouwen sehr ansprechend. Er verweist darauf, dass unser Glaube und unser ganzes geistliches Wissen immer die Frucht von Gemeinschaft ist. Und zwar einer vertikalen und einer horizontalen ‘Gemeinschaft der Heiligen’: der langen Glaubensgeschichte von Israel bis zur neutestamentlichen Gemeinde quer durch die Kirchengeschichte – und der zeitgenössischen Gemeinschaft mit den Menschen, die für unseren Glauben bisher eine persönliche Rolle spielten. Mir fallen da sofort Menschen ein, die für meinen persönlichen geistlichen Weg ganz wesentlich und prägend waren – und für die ich sehr dankbar bin.

But as people who belong to the communion of saints, we know that anything of spiritual value is not the result of individual accomplishment but the fruit of a communal life. It is the knowledge that has come to us through the ages from the people of Israel and the prophets, from Jesus and the saints, and from all who have played roles in the formation of our hearts. True spiritual knowledge belongs to the communion of saints.”
